2013… to think that it’s already been 18 years since we started the business, constantly evolving & changing, we’ve been through a lot to say the least! We recently moved offices a few weeks ago. This enabled us to be nostalgic and look at samples dating back 10 years. Shoe samples, coats, belts, jewelry, there were many prized Matt & Nat treasures found in dusty old boxes in our storage room. Most of them difficult to get rid of, we kept the ones which remind of our roots, where we started and where we are now. Back to basic & our roots, we’re happy to introduce our new line which is focused on a cleaner, minimalist aesthetic focusing on strong bold shapes & colors. We continue to live beautifully and experiment with new innovative sustainable materials. Here’s to a fresh new start all whilst remembering where we started from. Here’s a little flashback on key years for us.
1995 – Launching of MATT & NAT a vegan line with a name inspired by MAT(T)ERIAL + NATURE.
2007- 100% RECYCLED PLASTIC BOTTLES USED AS LININGS ON ALL PRODUCTS
2009- The infamous “experimental years”
2012- We went back to our roots
2013- We are excited to introduce the use of cork, a renewable resource into our line! We continue to be focused on creating beautiful things that have a positive impact.
- Our shoe line… our experimental days!
The run to NYC yesterday was a quick one so every minute had to be well worth ! Limited minutes could only mean one thing: I would have to stick with a theme. I picked Japanese and decided on the Noguchi museum in queens.
Isamu’s Noguchi’s sculptures are beautifully natural and innovative at the same time. Each piece deserves attention, the space and high commercial brick walls are completely non-descript from the outside and offer some great shelter from the hustle of NY: think slate and wooden interlocking sculptures in a zen garden. I plan on going back when I can spend some more time taking in the pieces and relaxing in the garden, well worth the trek to Long Island City !
The next and last stop given lack of time was UNIQLO . A trip to NY these days is not complete without a stopover at what many call the (better?) Japanese version of the GAP. Tailored cuts, quality craftsmanship and collaborations with everyone from JIL SANDER to Jun Takahashi are what you will find. The 89,000 store in midtown happens to be the largest retail location on 5th, I prefer SOHO and 34th, less overwhelming !
Get out of the hectic stores, blarring holiday music 24/7, these gifts make buying gifts all the more fun & easy! Click your way to new, fun, vegan, environmentally friendly products. These gifts are suitable for all ages , all whilst having a little kick to them. Our 2012 holiday guide, features a few of our favorites this season. Here’s the story behind each product.
1. Steel Toe Boot – $199
Our first pick, given the weather in Montreal, are these vegetarian shoes from Mooshoes. “The 14 Eye Boot was one of the first boots ever made by Vegetarian Shoes, and over a decade later this one is still going strong.” These stylish, water resistant boots makes walking though snow, slush & ice all the more bearable.
Reading this book will motivate & inspire you to get your health back into check to ring in the new year. Make 2013 the year you get your life & health back, and feel good doing it : ) This #1 New York Times best seller instructs you how to leave behind the discomfort of toxic hunger, cravings, and addictions to unhealthy foods.
These postcards take a new spin on the Holiday card. Send it to your friends & family this season, as they watch it grow! “This vegetable ink-based greeting card sends sentiments – with seeds. Just pop open your card, water the base, and sprinkle its packet over the diorama. In just a few days, you’ll have unruly sprouts of Lepidium sativum (that’s Garden cress) unfurling through the paper arches of your mini botanical garden.
Perfect for sunny desks and window sills, this edible crop brings surfaces (and salads!) to life. So you can have your card – and eat it too. U.S. postage required: $1.30. Made in Wales.” – uncommon goods.
4. Creed $ 199
Protect your MacBook and the environment this holiday season! Our Creed briefcase is the perfect way to carry your MacBook Pro, iPad, and iPhone while caring about the environment. Made with our signature vegan material, the smart brief blends vintage inspiration with the contrasting touch of modern, black, custom-made hardware.
LA’s Publish focuses on providing garments that are sustainable in terms of both design longevity and environmentally supportive production practices.
“Considering the amount of fabric waste that falls to the cutting room floor with each batch of big brand collections, this small initiative hopes to lessen the environmental impact of mass manufacturing, offer Publish’s loyal supporters a unique garment and encourage other companies to consider their role in production pollution all at the same time. “We were able to accumulate enough fabric to make 100 pieces per style per color,” says Richard Chung of Publish. “Hopefully with enough support, we’ll be able to continue this program to better our environment and keep helping positive causes.” – Coolhunting
Walking along the streets of Montreal on garbage day is for some a nightmare, others a playground. For artist Alexis O’Hara, the latter rings true. His art exhibition running from Nov 29- Dec 20th in Montreal features his new interactive sculpture piece titled “Squeeeequee! The Improbable Igloo”. Utilizing found materials, he creates an immersive sonic space constructed from 60-70 recycled speakers, all from Ecocentres or found on garbage day, creating a cozy, winter fort wonderland of sound. With carefully placed pillows and a microphone inside the sculpture, he creates a fun, inviting, memorable experience. This is your chance to echo your voice, with 4 microphones as the sole audio source for you and other howlers!
Shed your inhibitions & create dynamic sound! This cocoon of beauty from trash is a must see! Whether it’s nostalgic memories of winter fort building or making a cocoon , his sculpture is one to see and experience.
Squeeeequee! The Improbable Igloo will be on display at Maison de la Culture Maisonneuve (4200 Ontario E.), Nov. 29 – Dec. 20.
Just in time for the Holidays, we launched our exclusive Apple UK & US line. We had quite the fun photoshoot with our lovely photographer April. Collaborating , playing with lighting, angles & bouncing ideas off of one another, we got our creative juices flowin’. So much so that we punctured a hole in our backdrop… we got pretty creative to say the least! Here are a few behind the scene snap shots from the shoot.
After a fun photoshoot with our Photographer April, and the launch of our exclusive collection for Apple, we had a busy week! We are all so pleased at how this line came together this season. The pop of color & varied styles make us happy to introduce the exclusive line this holiday season! It brings us great pleasure to work alongside like-minded individuals such as the Apple team. Though our company is MUCH smaller than Apple, we are humbled by the great opportunity this gives us. We continue to push forth in the market, all whilst being environmentally friendly. In every bag 21 plastic bottles are recycled & our labeling is made from recycled cork. Our Apple line consists of 4 styles this season.
Motto : In our signature Vintage material in cognac. Closed with a nylon zipper, the bag features a padded compartment for a 13-inch MacBook, and a separate, protective compartment for an iPad or 11-inch MacBook Air.

I met Robin Webb back in 1995 when I decided I would attempt to take MATT & NAT from university project/business plan to reality. En route to India I stopped off in Brighton, a beautiful seaside town in the UK. When asking for directions I was told by a local to look for edible shoes made from lettuce wraps, when I saw the sign, I knew I was at my destination
Robin changed the vegan fashion world when he founded VEGETARIAN SHOES back in 1991. I can’t think of another vegan footwear brand that has been around as long, it may even be the first vegan brand in the universe ! The products are indestructible, below are the airseals, I’m the proud owner of 3 styles.
Over the last couple of years a lot of vegan brands have come and gone. It’s nice to see that VEGETARIAN SHOES have remained true to form, 20 years later nothing compares to their timelessness and durability. Low key and timeless, much like Robin himself, they’re the kind of styles that you start to like and end up loving
In North America best place to buy them is at mooshoes, they also sell on their site in Europe
If you own a pair, send in pics!
Kris Carr, New York Times best-selling author, wellness activist and cancer thriver recently released her new book “Crazy Sexy Kitchen”. Her inspiring story of regaining her life after being diagnosed with a rare, incurable stage 4 cancer is worth every page.
Here is how she was able to change her lifestyle.
How did your wake-up call encourage you to make a lifestyle change?
It taught me how to listen to my brilliant inner guide, brought me back to nature (my church), the garden and kitchen (my pharmacies), and connected me more deeply with the people and animals who set my heart ablaze. I learned that a nutrient dense, plant-passionate diet rules, the Standard American Diet destroys (everything), stress sucks (all life-force), exercise is non-negotiable (great for your head, heart, cells and ass-ets), joy is utterly contagious, and having fun must be taken very seriously.
What I learned transformed my life forever – now it can transform yours. My journey has ignited a global wellness revolution that’s resonated with thousands of health, spiritual wealth and happiness seekers. CanSer babes and “Prevention is HOT” cheerleaders alike have flocked to my books and lectures to learn how to look and feel better, lose weight, reduce stress and suffering, have more energy and nourish their spirits – even Oprah got excited about the Crazy Sexy revolution.
How does Crazy Sexy Kitchen set itself apart from other recipe books?
Crazy Sexy Kitchen gives you the education, recipes and know-how needed to adopt a joyful and vibrant Crazy Sexy Diet and Lifestyle. This jaw dropping-ly delicious veggie manifesto for gourmands and novices alike is filled with inspiration, education, and cooking tips—plus more than 150 nourishing, nosh-worthy recipes. Whether you’re a newbie cook or a fancy cheffy, a vegan or an omnivore, a jet-setter or a hot mama, this book will change your life.
This book is a great read for everyone who’s thinking about changing their lifestyle & eating patterns. The hardest part is starting, but once you give yourself the push, you’ll never look back! Empowerment is the best satisfaction. Regain yourself & your life. Take charge, feel good, be beautiful inside & out!
Happy Monday everyone : )

The first ‘official’ office of M&N on Chabanel (the fashion district of Montreal) was an 800 sq ft space with a reception area, showroom and ‘assembly’ room in the back. After my landlord got fedup of seeing UPS trucks pull up to my apartment, I figured it was time to take the next step, that was in the winter of 2001. That spot supported myself, Manny and our only employee for 2 years. We would move 2 more times before settling into our current digs at 225 Chabanel.
We’ve made many friends and memories on Chabanel in this metropolis of rags and glass and have seen developments with the city investing in some great projects over the last 2 years. Montreal is the fashion marketing center of Canada and remains one of the top 3 fashion cities in North America after LA and NY.
At the end of the year we are going to Ville St. Laurent, Deslauriers, just off rue Lebeau. Once again going back to our roots, we’re moving to a ground level spot with trees and grass to house the M&N family, ironically enough, it has the same feel as my first apartment, in a good way

At MATT & NAT one of the exciting parts of what we do is being constantly on the lookout for new materials/applications that push the envelope in terms of sustainability and innovation.
Contrary to popular belief, cork is regarded as a sustainable material that is easy to harvest and therefore a friend of the environment. I can also personally attest that it makes a great sound and thermal insulator for homes
We played around with cork this year in the 2012 collections and experimented with it in the TRIP and the CALI. Due to unprecedented response and demand, we are expanding the offering to include the SCHLEPP in our SPRING 13 collection.
If you pay close attention, you’ll catch our giveaway on facebook over the coming weeks….
a few items I never travel without! My Raylan & my favorite reads.
Our lunchroom discussions are often about culture, fashion, food and our favorite travel memory. Over our thanksgiving weekend we had a giveaway contest on our Facebook page where we invited our followers to win a Raylan bag by describing what traveling beautifully means to them. Here was our winning response by Francine Darroch.
“Traveling beautifully to me – means being willing to experience new cultures, places and things! It means the opportunity to open new doors both literally and figuratively by challenging my way of understanding the world! Traveling beautifully also requires lovely, versatile, and reliable luggage to support the journey!”
From various discussions on travel inside and out of office and loving to travel and meet people myself, I question motives of travel for individuals. What kind of traveler are you? Tell us!
My love stems from meeting people from cultures other than my own. From their fashion to the food they eat and ways of expressing themselves, those who are different than myself fascinate me. Maybe it’s my roots growing up in Montreal being surrounded by various cultures other than my own that makes me appreciate difference. After a year living in San Francisco, I got to tell you nothing irks me anymore. Individuality is what drives me to explore. And let me tell you; I’ve been meeting all kinds of fun, beautiful and interesting individuals! I guess what I’m trying to get at is; wherever you are in the world, be different, stand out, and make a difference! Explore & appreciate culture wherever you are : )
How was your weekend? It was a beautifully colored weekend here in Montreal, and I’m not just talking about the many colors of fall. On Saturday we joined thousands of runners on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for Montreal’s first Color Run. Some were dressed as animals, ballerinas, wearing wigs, and all sorts of costumed accessories ; the motto of the run was the crazier the better! Crazy is a good name for it! We got splashed with colors every kilometer we ran (or walked as many of us did). What better motivation to run? I wish this happened on a regular basis! Though some of the color throwers were getting quite rough towards the end, splashing colors in our hair, mouth, face & eyes… I guess the color was starting to get to some…it sure got me all excited and riled up! Though we didn’t come first at the finish line, we did successfully finish the 5 k run multicolored… 2nd to last. The goal wasn’t who arrived at the finish line first, it was mostly focused on who had most color plastered over their body. There’s no rush when you’re having fun!
After the run we indulged at Aux Vivres for delicious vegan brunch. This place is amazing! Have you tried it yet? If you haven’t and you’re around Montreal, check it out! There’s something for everyone to enjoy : ) We pretty much ordered the whole menu. We got rice bowls, salads, fresh juices, smoothies, corn bread, tofu scramble, my mouth is watering thinking of it!… I think I’ll go back this week, I’m a regular now.
Have a beautifully colored week everyone!
You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it….
NO, I’m not talking about shrimp people, I’m talking about kale !
Recently over at our M&N lunch room, we have kale on the brain, some interesting facts:
- Per calorie, kale has more iron than beef
- Kale is high in Vitamin K which helps protect against various cancers, increased levels of vitamin K can help people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
- Kale is filled with powerful antioxidants that help protect against various cancers.
- Kale is high in Vitamin A which is great for your vision, your skin as well as helping to prevent lung and oral cavity cancers.
- Kale is high in Vitamin C, helpful for your immune system, your metabolism and your hydration.
- Kale is high in calcium. Per calorie, kale has more calcium than milk, which aids in preventing bone loss, preventing osteoporosis and maintaining a healthy metabolism.
- Kale is a great detox food. Filled with fiber and sulfur, both great for detoxifying your body and keeping your liver healthy.
Until the Middle Ages, Kale was one of the most common green vegetables in all of Europe. Seems like she’s making a comeback.
Here’s a great recipe for kale chips: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/baked-kale-chips/. Much healthier than traditional potato chips, this site also has some other great kale recipes (vegetarian kale soup).
AND what other dark green leaf makes for a super cutesy, original bouquet to impress that hipster vegan chick/dude that’s not giving you the time of day
My Le Croco had been sitting at my parents house for the past 15 years, collecting dust and dirt. I finally got around to picking it up and got it cleaned/tuned up this summer. She now has a new vegan seat and cork tape on bullhorns. Didn’t want to mess with the rest of the parts since this is the way the original maker, Sandy, built this blade , silver soldering with Cinelli and love.
Sandy was a racer in Quebec, who built beautiful, one of a kind bikes.
I bought the bike from a racer who knew Sandy, spoke to the racer last month and he still had his 15 years later! It was nice to catch up and get back in the saddle JL at C&L Cycles, here in Montreal, tells me that Sandy is no where to be found. These bikes have become somewhat of a collectors item since Sandy was one of the best builders in Quebec back in the day. No one knows what
happened to him now … apparently he took off to Eastern Europe.
& NO, JL, I will not sell you my Croco!
I took quite a few trips to the bike shop this summer because I always dig the process…. this is when I renewed my dream of products made from recycled bike inner tubes. This is another process that we’re enjoying here lately at MATT & NAT. We’re hoping to have some pieces ready for Fall ’13, stay tuned !

A good book can affect the way you perceive certain aspects of your existence. A GREAT book can completely change your perception.
EAT TO LIVE by Joel Fuhrman is a great book. Beyond the latest trends of going vegan/raw we find hard facts regarding everything from clarity of mind to avoiding diabetes, cancer and living an extra 17 years, on average. Knowledge is power.
Joel Fuhrman doesn’t ask you to be a saint, just be good to your body 90 % of the time. Couple of us here in the office can attest that once you start eating this way, it’s hard to go back There’s a six week menu at the back of the book, no excuses !
