Who/ Amy Hetu, Intern at MATT & NAT
What/ Protesting the FUR IS GREEN campaign
When/ March 20th, 2009
Where/ MATT & NAT Head Office
Why/ After hearing about the obscene campaign the Fur Council of Canada was promoting, “Fur is Green”, Amy felt the need to inform her fellow colleagues and peers about the actual truth behind the FCC. Go to their website to see just how ignorant these people really are: www.furcouncil.com
How/ Wearing her FUR IS NOT GREEN t-shirt during an oral presentation in front of 100 of her peers is only one of the ways Amy is getting the word out. Other initiatives include an active Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=121917660555), as well as constantly educating people around her on the unethical practices of the FCC. Check out their website to see for yourself how ridiculous this campaign really is. http://www.furcouncil.com/furisgreen.aspx
Read on, help the cause and receive a thank you package in return.
The fur industry has been around since the turn of time, but the idea of having a dead animal on ones back is starting to die down. The recent generations see no use in slaughtering animals when we have other great alternative eco-friendly materials we can use instead. As an attempt to peak some interest, the Fur Council of Canada has decided to revamp the dead trade by coming up with a new marketing initiative called “Fur is Green”.
According to the FCC website, “Fur is NATURAL, RENEWABLE and SUSTAINABLE.” Fur may be natural on the ANIMAL…but not as a coat. I can’t seem to wrap my head around the fact that these people actually believe that skinning an animal for its fur is NATURAL. The FCC also goes on to say that not only would we be protecting nature by wearing fur but also supporting people who live on the land…aka the people who trap and kill these animals, isn’t it 2009? “Nothing is wasted” they claim-how about an innocent life for one? The fur council promotes one of the most inhumane industries known to man…
Not only is the fur industry even more pollutant then they claim to be, but they try to put the blame on synthetic fur and how its production process is polluting our eco systems…what total bullshit. According to a study done by Ford Motor Company engineer Gregory H. Smith published by PETA, it takes almost 3 times as much energy to make a coat from trapped animal pelts than it does to make a fake fur coat. I don’t know about you, but this does not sound like an environmentally-sound practice to me…
With all of that being said, it’s obvious that the Fur Council of Canada does not have any concrete information to back up their campaign that Fur is Green. These poor creatures are killed in the most inhumane way and are then pumped with all kinds of chemicals that pollute our eco system. These pelts are not recyclable, renewable or sustainable.
Just to prove how mindless these people are, one of their slogans was “Save a Tree, wear a Beaver!” Why not save the tree and the beaver and fuck the FCC?
Email your letter at info@furcouncil.com (CC blog@mattandnat.com) and tell them your thoughts on their ludicrous campaign, the top 10 letters will win a thank you package from MATT & NAT.
Deadline to send letters is Midnight on April 20th, we’ll announce the winners shortly thereafter.

I’m totally agree with everything, and I’m so glad to see that some people are still conscious about what happen of those animals. I think that we don’t have to kill an animal for anything. I can have another kind of clothes, and I don’t think that we need four in our life, actually it’s those animals that need it the most. I would like to tell you that you have all of my encouragement!!
Four is NOT green !

Love the shirt! What an awesome idea! I refuse to wear fur and have been a vegetarian for almost six years now! Fur is NOT green! Props to Amy!
Cheers!

I will NEVER be ashamed of wearing my fur. I own a fur hat, scarf, mittens and gloves. They we made from a long raccoon coat my grandfather hunted, and made himself to keep my grandmother warm when they were living in Abitibi in the 1940’s. They ate all the meat from the raccons, they used everything they could use, like the Amerindians. NOTHING on the market today is warmer than my hat. NOTHING. Tiny ridiculous tuques in the winter time, when it’s -35 with the wind, just doesn’t cut it for me. Even wool or any other technical outdoor clothing cannot do the job as well as fur. Sorry. I do agree that fur coats are outrageous for someone living in California and descending from a limo with a white fox long coat. THAT is outrageous. Or any other fur that’s worn just to for the «pretty effect». But in Canada, in the cold winter? Please. This said, I still like Mat et Nat and I’m a great fan. I must own 1 bag per season ever since they started.

I’ve always loved M&N, not because it’s a vegan line, but because of the styles (I found this blog while shopping bags!).
But I’m very disappointed by this post because to me, it says that you don’t respect other’s choices because it doesn’t reflect yours. Like Justine, I love my fur scarf made in Canada from Canadian beaver. I live in the country: beleive me, there’s nothing cute or cuddly about that animal. They destroy pretty much everything around them and their population needs to be controlled. I’d rather have a long-lasting scarf than the animal going to waste.
But it’s not because I like fur and leather that I can’t buy a M&N bag… or is it? If I see from your point of view, I wouldn’t respect or buy anything vegan?

I always love fur ! And i will love it forever !!!
April 1st, 2009 at 9:53 am
Fur lovers are pathetic. Would you wear your DOG?! What idiots responding above. Chic GirlieGirlArmy gals wouldnt be caught DEAD in the dead, decomposing skins of tortured animals!!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:20 am
Real fur is not a cool fashion statement. It’s a gross out-dated status symbol that serves no purpose. Fake fur looks the same, keeps you just as warm & costs less! Plus, I don’t feel like an ignorant old lady wearing it!
April 1st, 2009 at 11:31 am
Justine, the fur you have inherited as an heirloom is entirely different from the fur being created now. Wear it if you must, but I can’t imagine anyone in good conscience condoning the way Canada treats its animals. Three-day old baby seals being clubbed to death is okay with you? Seriously? Or just not if they wear it in California? Or just if it’s a “pesky” animal (Janet), like the beaver? The thing is, we are supposed to be an evolved, intellectually advanced animal. We have the techniques to create highly renewable clothing made from natural and synthetic materials. We know from countless scientific studies that animals feel pain, terror, sadness, and grief. There is nothing “beautiful” about wearing a dead animal carcass. I also haven’t eaten meat for 16 years. Animals are not here just to serve our selfish whims. We owe them– and ourselves– so much more. How can we ever expect society to respect life if people continue to treat animals like a commodity? Modern fur wearers have an invisible sign on their foreheads; it says, “Possibly ignorant. Definitely cruel.”

Another publicity stunt on a topic that’s old news. Why don’t you find some other gimmick. Why don’t you raise awareness about poverty, homelessness, people starving, global warming, a hundred other problems around the world, even here in North America. But I guess these problems are not “cool” enough for your market. and wouldn’t help you sell your “vegan: leather/plastic bags. Your customers can’t bother occupying themselves helping real people. they just want to feel good thinking they did something for society! What a waste of an opportunity to bring real causes to the public. Start by thinking about people first.
April 1st, 2009 at 7:35 pm
When Matt & Nat say “JUST HOW IGNORANT THESE PEOPLE REALLY ARE”, I think they meant people that say things like “Why not save the tree and the beaver and fuck the Fur Council of CANADA”… As far as CANADA is concerned, beavers don’t need saving - animals like beavers, raccoons, fox, etc are a real pain in the ass when you don’t live in the city. And those are the animals of the CANADIAN fur trade.
Another ignorant comment: “three-day old seals clubbed to death” Any person who does a minimum of research knows that whitecoats (maybe using the right terms wouldn’t hurt) are grown and have left the mother by the time the hunt starts…
Yes, people are really ignorant… shame on matt & nat for encouraging intolerance and bashing Canadian jobs.
April 1st, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I find it unfortunate that so many people think that the non-fur clothes they wear (vegan or not) doesn’t kill animals. Even a hemp bag required wildlife habitat to be cleared and transformed into cropland. The animals that used to live in that habitat likely starved to death because they moved into the adjacent habitat and overcrowded it.
Fur harvesting is strictly regulated so that animal populations are maintained at healthy levels. The animals that are trapped would have died that year from causes such as predation (being torn apart by another animals), starvation (extremely painful and torturous), hypothermia (very painful), or disease (nasty). Instead, these animals are trapped using techniques that have been refined to comply with the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS - look it up) to minimize suffering. The most important thing is that these animals live in natural habitat that trappers work hard to protect and maintain on the landscape. That habitat allows many other animals to live and thrive. We should all recognize that hunters, anglers and trappers work hard to protect wildlife habitat.
But what would I know? I spent 10 years in university studying biology and wildlife habitat (PhD in Wildlife Biology). I would much rather accept responsibility for directly killing a few animals, than destroy the habitat that supports entire ecosystems. Habitat loss is the single greatest threat to wildlife throughout the world, not hunting and trapping.

Why it is a great information page is brought down to an unbelievable piece of garbage because of its author. All the comments against wearing fur where flushed down the toilet because the author had to uses words like “bullshit†instead of letting the study from Gregory Smith stand. In addition, the author of the page had to disparage the whole argument against wearing fur because of the final words, “Fuck the FCC.†Next time stay out of the gutter.

Mitch, you may have book smarts, but you are missing something the rest of us call, “feeling” or emotions. It’s called compassion. Label your traps the way you want, but they ultimately painfully pin animals until their skin can be ripped from their bones so you (or someone you’re defending) can don a cute hat! Or scarf! Jeezus, I guess you wear that flesh for just about any ol’ reason. Disgusting! I have 20 years of education too, Mitch. Does that make me less guilty? (a: no). You can justify your killing however you want, but killing needlessly is killing needlessly. We wouldn’t have to “maintain animals at healthy levels” if we had any effing humility about our place in this universe. You answer to your “god” and I’ll answer to mine. How bout that?
April 3rd, 2009 at 6:22 pm
Right on - I appreciate your efforts on behalf of fur-bearing animals. Your post wound up on my Facebook profile today somehow, not sure how, but I was glad to see it. Sadie and I have a section in our latest book, Going Green (2008), about the fur industry and its deceptive and inhumane practices. We also have a few posts on our blog about fur, including “the fur test.” Thanks for speaking out! I’m glad to know about you.

Re: Melissa’s inane comment (the April FOOLS Melissa not the 3/21). Melissa, please list what you are doing to combat poverty, homelessness, people starving, global warming and the hundred other problems in North America alone. Funny, I thought bringing attention to whether “Fur is Green” would qualify as doing something to help global warming, oh which is then tied to people starving and poverty too. Only extremely close-minded people such as yourself believe in that all or nothing attitude. Please tell me where I can get your crystal ball that lets you make a comment like yours with such certainty–that people who love animals do nothing for people. How the hell do you know what other things we are involved in? Guess what? People who care about animals tend to be compassionate people. I do a lot for people and animals. But ya know what, girl? If I chose to only do kind things for animals then who the hell are you to judge? Ask yourself, what is it about us that threatens you so much. Oh, and PS–if you don’t like it here, go to coach.com…I’m sure they would be happy to have you. PPS–waiting for your charity list and then we can tussle over who is the better humanitarian. LAME!

Anger breeds anger.
Intolerance breeds intolerance.
Normally kind people lose their minds. It’s all just opinions in the end. Let arguments turn to discussions. Let anger and intolerance turn to listening and observing. In all our lives. Not just here. Not just now.
Two cents.
April 5th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
Really? There are people out there that are so adamant about wearing fur that they use hostile language and imaginary pseudo facts? I certainly hope Melissa from April 1st is an April Fools joke, because nothing is more “Old news” than the plight of the homeless. Not to knock or deny the importance of helping the misfortuned, but obviously the battle of removing “Green” from a campaign is newer than a battle against something that has been for ages.
I think this is a great post and a great movement. My main issue with Fur Council and campaigns like this is their capitalism or “Going Green”. Trying to trick people into thinking they are helping the environment when they are just continuing the carnage. While hemps and even organic fabrics do harm the earth, they do not harm as much as Fur and Leathers. Meat Markets cause more pollutants than cars (taking in accounts of methane from cows, delivery and the powering of the actual factory/slaughter house). Lets take the lesser of two evils until we can find a better way.
ps: If you want to wear leathers and furs, wear second hand. That way you are not furthering leather production nor production of anything at all, decreasing your foot print.

Melissa must live in a bubble - the horrible fur business is a publicity stunt! Get Real. They do skin animals alive, they do make them live in horrible condition only do die horrible, painful deaths, all for “fashion”.
Nothing about fur is Green. Melissa you need to get out of your bubble
April 10th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
I sing online and was watching one of my friends sing on camera one day and saw her wearing this thick fur jacket which I could see was real for a fact, so I asked her if it was real and the result was I got blocked. How many poor innocent animals get killed so you could like like some pretty rich lady in a furcoat is the only question I have to those who like their fur. It is a shame that you don’t care about our conservation of animals and nature and the fact that you are wearing real fur makes a lot of us sick to the stomach. You go girl and you tell them what is going on and I bet you half these resoonses above mine are probably from people who like their furs!
April 14th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
I find it interesting that the well-educated wildlifer Mitch knows that the animals trapped by the big, cuddly fur industry “would have died that year from causes such as predation…” I guess he knows something we don’t, because I was under the impression that animals, when not clubbed to death/skinned alive/trapped, live longer than a year! Silly me. And of course the “new” ways to kill are humane. From what I’ve heard, the fur industry often hugs animals until their fur falls off. No harm done! Super green! Share the love! But not those pesky animals like beavers and raccoons. If you have teeth or claws or poor table manners, death is the only acceptable thing. Really, it’s just good manners.
April 14th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
I honestly think that fighting amongst ourselves in this forum is a waste of time. (Like much of Facebook, actually.) Get out there in front of the people who CAN make a difference and have your say. You’re not going to change anyone’s mind here.
April 15th, 2009 at 12:32 am
i personally believe, it is very insensitive of people to have all their needs fulfilled regardless of the pain involved in the process. Animals do not have to be killed every time a human (person) is hungry. is it? humans are that important? well no.! i really don’t believe so. humans make their self up , all the way and rule over everything. animals have a life, they feel pain, just like us. how would it be to kill a human for our hunger? or any other satisfaction , for that matter.
The terrorist attacks leave people so devastated and intimidated , with all the blood and the guns and the tears. however, isn’t the same thing included while killing an animal? blood, sharp weapon(slaughter) and well, tears(pain) ? Try looking into an animals eye, maybe a dog, and you would see it. the emotions would come crawling up to you. i have noticed it.
death is not we are supposed to create , we are definitely not supposed to make life miserable for others (not only humans but animals too!). our sins have gone way past the forgiveness , i think it is time we stop committing any more than we already have..
April 15th, 2009 at 3:54 am
I Can’t believe fur companies are seriously trying to pull off that fur is green!! what a crazy joke! the T-shirt is fantastic and i think we all need to join together to bring this campaign down. fur is far from green it should be classified as “FUR IS RED!!”. Fur is death and pain just to make rich uncaring people look awful. i hope fur soon goes ot of fashion for good. peace everyone!! Hope we get a change.
April 15th, 2009 at 7:56 am
It’s unbelievable to me how people can be so cold and unfeeling by the fact that animals are tortured and skinned alive……dogs included……obviously they haven’t watched the horrific video of the poor little things staring at their killers screaming in pain, then tossed in a pile while still alive. What the hell? A person that thinks this is acceptable, in my book is someone who has no conscience or heart……wouldn’t trust them for anything……Thank God, there are people trying to help!!! Everyone must be educated on reading labels on clothes before buying…Faux doesn’t mean fake…..
April 16th, 2009 at 1:35 am
The people who think skinning animals alive and tossing them into a pile of animals that are still alive and suffering is okay are shameful to the human race.
Fur is not fashionable, it’s not cool, and it not green…. It’s RED
April 16th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
please help the enviroment. i want to help with you.
April 16th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
I would challenge anyone who says that are ok with wearing fur to seek out the facts about how the animals and then make a decision - before they say - it doesn’t matter I like fur and I’ll do what I want. The animals (those who are trapped AND those who are raised for fur) live in tiny cages, exposed to the elements, where they lose their minds from lack of stimulation and exercise to eventually be killed via anal electrocution or other means, unless your talking about fur from China where animals (including cats & dogs) are skinned ALIVE… because it’s easier. Trapped animals are lucky if they are killed by the trap - if they are not they will be injured, attack by other animals, starve to death or nearly starve until they are bludgeoned to death a few days later when the trapper comes back to check on his traps. That is the reality and I’m shocked and sadden that people would come on here and defend the fur that they wear. Truly.
April 16th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Yea I totally agree with you Gloria. Any people associated with the fur trade make me ashamed to be a human being! I will certainly right a letter!
April 16th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
So The Fur Council is trying to say killing and exploiting wild animals in the most cruel and disgusting ways in the name of sport and profit for their fur is enviromentally friendly?! Are they out of their freaking minds?! What is even more insane is that both Canada and The United States’ governments continue to allow, support, and condone this form of animal cruelty and exploitation. Why is Canada and The United States’ governments so hell bent on exploiting and abusing wildlife in the name of profit and special interests? I don’t understand it. What is being done to wildlife in the United States and Canada is wrong and it has to stop! Both Canada and my own country The United States make me sick!
April 16th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Anyone who says wearing fur is OK, please watch this video. You will be embarrassed by the cruelty that you are defending. If you still support wearing fur because the animals are a nuisance to your life, than you should not be allowed to be alive. Enough said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7aPoDg5fDc
April 16th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Uh, Ms. Justine, you are quite brave for even commenting with such iignorance…just so you know, it’s not the Middle Ages anymore hun and you need to get in-check and know we’re in the year 2009 where people live in-harmony with G-d’s fellow creatures. It starts in the home, and seems to me that I feel bad for you and those who are so uneducated and uncompassionate towards others with feelings and red-blood flowing through there vains…perhaps one day someone will be smart enough to use YOU as a jacket and heat, considering there’s plenty of hot air flowing all through your blog commentary there. Ya know Justi, it’s a well-known fact that we karmatically meet our final moment on this Earth based on how we chose to live it…..I can’t tell you how elated I get when I read the newspapers today and more’n'more hunters are meeting their fate with their own rifles. Bummer. May G-d Bless you Justine and may you soon learn that you’re the minority in this world. ANIMALS RULE!!! XOXO
April 16th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
I just in my letter, hope it helps!
April 16th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
How amusing it is to see that people, like the FCC, think wearing fur is “green”…I bet if you ask how many of them have dogs, and would they wear them as coats, they’d tell you “no”. Too bad the fur coats that people wear don’t emit the agonizing screams from the animals upon which thier fur was taken… Animals are God’s creation too, and just because He didn’t give them a voice, doesn’t mean they should be subjected to such inhumane situations. May God have mercy on the ignorant and evil.
April 16th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
I can’t believe the idiots that are defending this campaign get out of here with your ludicrious ideas if it was your nothers they were skinning you’d be mute like the animal they skin for furr shame on you and your mothers
and you can kiss my A**

A few quotes to think about:
“Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.”
~Thomas Edison~
“It’s a matter of taking the side of the weak against the side of the strong, something the best people have always done.”
~Harriet Beecher Stowe~
“All beings tremble before violence. All fear death. All love life.”
~Buddha~
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
~Gandhi~
“I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore I can do, or any kindness I can show to any creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it. For I shall not pass this way again.”
~Stephen Grellet - Quaker Leader~
For those of you that think it’s okay to harm animals, I hope that you truly think about these quotes and what they mean. Then take a long, hard look at yourselves and think about what it is inside of you that makes you think it’s okay to harm other living beings. If you’re brutally honest with yourselves, you won’t be happy with what you see in that mirror. Violence is violence, fear is fear, and pain is pain.
It’s not okay! All living beings deserve to be treated with kindness, dignity, and respect.
April 17th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
Fur is brown and gray and white and black, and lots of colors in between, but one thing it is NOT is green. Ever seen a green seal or squirrel? or any other animal?
April 18th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Sorry if this post came a little late, I just wanted to post my opinion:
I understand the sentimental value that Justine’s fur garments may have to her, due partially to the fact that everyone has become somewhat desensitized to the wearing of fur. Even though I do not hold human beings higher than other species, I would be even more horrified if I saw someone walking down the street wearing a bloody suit made of human skin than if that person was wearng a fur coat. Maybe due to the graphic intensity. But wearing of a dead raccoon unnecessary and gross.
I don’t however, agree with her wearing the fur. No one should be spreading the message that an animal has to die for you to be comfy and warm. While she may have not found another non-fur toque/scarf/pair of mittens to replace her fur ones, she is spreading the message that killing animals who have as much of a right to live as anyone is acceptable in this day and age.
As she mentioned, her grandmother and grandfather survived off of hunting animals for their meat and pelts in the 1940s, and I can’t argue against what they have done, but that was then. This is 2009. My heavy cotton, polyester-filled coat keeps me warm, and there are plenty of other alternatives to animal fibers. So there is no need for fur in anyone’s wardrobe!
Just sharing my thoughts
May 13th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Wow. To all you history-ignorant people, well, f-you.
So you think that 3/4 of the world population that lives out of hunting or raising animals for food are all a bunch of retarded serial killers? People in Argentina that even eat dogs to survive are crazy? Native Americans that have great respect for nature and all living creatures were fucktards for chasing buffalos to eat and keep themselves warm with the skin? I do hate the fact that in Asia, they kill all kinds of animals to get a tiny part that is aphrodisiac. That’s ridiculous. But when it’s a matter of survival, it’s still not okay? I bet a million dollars that if you all were in a serious situation that needed the use of animals, you’d be willing to understand how animals are important to humans. Start thinkin about the rest of the world situation before thinkin about your little bourgeois life and your little eco-friendly North Face jackets. And yes, until you’ve tried fur in our cold Canadian winter, you don’t know shit about the difference between the confort of a fur hat compared to ANY other hats. So please people, calm down and get a little educated about the rest of the world.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Millions of rabbits and other animals are killed for their fur every single year. Most of the fur on trashy boots or the collars of tacky jackets comes from fur farms, where animals are kept in tiny, filthy cages. They spend their entire lives standing on cage floors made of thin wires before being killed in horrible ways! People need to stop shopping at places where fur is sold and tells friends and family too as well!! People can buy fake fur and it should be encouraged in the media!! STOP BUYING FUR!!
July 28th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
i cant believe what people do to these poor animals. There is a little local zoo near me that rescued a tiger that they where going to kill and sell on the internet. But i don’t see why it was wrong for native Americans to kill animals. it was there only way of surviving.they uses every part of the animal the only hunted what they needed and pray to the spirit of the animal thanking him for feeding and clothing there people. But what they do now is sooo wrong and sick how would they feel if they grew up in a tiny cage and killed in harsh ways for FASHION
STOP BUYING FUR
September 14th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
I don’t agree with this! I think fur is green for real, but everything is good if there is no abuse. I think someone who is buying a fur item, is a investment for life in all the point of view.
September 15th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
If you are one of the above animal lovers and are vegan + don’t have pets + never consumed animal by-products of any kind, i have respect for you choice and philosophy. This message is not intended for you, please skip.
For everyone else that blasted fur, you’re just a bunch of barfing hypocrites. How can you find the courage to criticize the fur industry when the food/leather/pet industry that you enjoy are no different? Does chaining a dog to your back yard by FORCE (skip this if your puppy came to you willingly from the wild) count as humane? And farming for something to put in your daily Big Mac…..I’ll bet the hunted animals in the wild lived a good deal happier than the cows caged in mass production…
